The staff, especially Ana Rita, were incredibly kind. She had treats for the kids and even offered to watch our baby while we went on the night tour to see the turtles nesting. We also had good tours with Oen, though I'm not sure of the spelling, a guide who works with the guesthouse. I loved the setting in San Francisco village by the water, and couldn't get enough of the view from the breakfast porch. The place is comfortable, clean, and well cared for, though not modern. Our AC worked just fine, and there was a fan as well. Little touches made it easier to stay here, including hammocks, kids' toys, binoculars for bird watching, and free rain gear. There are a couple of places to eat in the village, and we were glad to stay here instead of in Tortugero village.
We loved the peaceful spot, just a few minutes' walk from shops, and the hosts made delicious vegan meals and took us on a couple of tours. The hammocks and kids' toys were a hit. We could see monkeys, iguanas, herons, and frogs right beside the hotel. Lovely hosts, great value, and a beautiful part of the world.
Ana Rita's food was delicious, and Gerardo knows the region better than anyone. His tour is highly recommended. The lodge is simple, with lovely river views, and it's peaceful and quiet. Don't expect luxury, it's a place for people who like simplicity, but the hosts made us feel like royalty. We stayed with Ana Rita and Gerardo for one night in May, and it couldn't have been better. They were extremely welcoming and made us feel at home. Thanks to both of them for a wonderful time!
We watched the sun come up over the river from Chinitas, and it was magical. The garden plants were incredible, too. The rooms are basic, as you'd expect at an eco lodge, but the owners were very kind and helpful. They arranged a wonderful Tortuguero National Park trip with Owen, who took us along parts of the river away from the other tourist boats. He was an excellent guide. The lodge is right on the river in San Fransisco, about 10 minutes by boat from Tortuguero. The owners can arrange taxi boats from Chinitas to Tortuguero for around $3 per person. In my view, this little lodge is much nicer than staying in Totuguero.
