The staff were consistently kind, warm, and great at their jobs. I also loved the Thursday party at Hemingway Plaza, and the plaza is handy for souvenirs. The pools are lovely, with a pool bar and snack bar, and open views of the ocean. In January the ocean breeze made it a little too cool for me, though I can imagine it feels good in hotter months. The beach was pleasant but rough underfoot, so water shoes are needed. I expected more given how close it is to Playa Pilar. The Gran Muthu Cayo Guillermo next door has a noticeably better beach. Imperial guests can use it, but not its bar or food services. Neither beach was cleared of seaweed or garbage during our stay, even though there were lots of grounds staff and the resort was busy. It would be much better if the two resorts shared amenities, with family and adults-only areas. Dining was mostly enjoyable, especially the grilled fish station. We were also allowed to book the Indian a la carte restaurant at the neighboring Gran Muthu in Cayo Guillermo, and that was one of the best meals I've had in Cuba. The Imperial itself had limited options. Its beach restaurant was closed while we were there, and the beach bar wasn't reliably open. The neighboring resort has more restaurants, but Imperial guests can't dine there freely, apart from one a la carte reservation a week, which was disappointing. Drinks were also a letdown for variety and quality compared with other resorts. We loved the Pina colada, but classic Cuban cocktails like mojitos were often unavailable. Our room was large and modern-looking, with a safe, bar fridge, TV, balcony chairs, and nice views. Housekeeping was acceptable, though towels weren't changed during our week. The room could feel damp and had a persistent odd smell, as did the ground floors of many buildings. Wi-Fi worked reasonably when it connected, but dropped often. It didn't work on the beach or around the beachside buildings, which looked mostly empty, so maybe it wasn't activated there. Public bathrooms were a recurring problem: broken doors, missing locks, and no toilet paper or soap in many of them. This stood out on our last day, after checkout, when we needed them until our evening departure. I usually go back to my room when I have one. I did appreciate the shower room you can book for a late departure, and the woman who maintained it did an excellent job. The Gran Muthu Imperial was enjoyable, with comfortable rooms, decent food, and a relaxing feel, but maintenance and limited amenities compared with the neighboring resort got in the way. I'd appreciate the experience more if the resorts shared amenities and had an adults-only section, the rainbow resort and a family resort.

We were transferred from Iberostar playa pilar coyo coco because there was no water at that hotel. The day we arrived, things seemed fine. Then we had maid Olivia in building #8. She came to our room several times a day and stole my expensive channel creams, sunscreen, deodorants, and my best clothes. I complained and asked customer service to change her and keep her out, but she continued coming in and taking my and my husband's best clothes. The loss was over $1000. When we got home to Canada, we realized more nice clothes were gone. I had given her gifts and money every day, but she never thanked us. Instead, she confronted us in the hall about asking to change the maid. Even after we asked reception to prevent her from entering, they took no action, such as changing the keys. Olivia came again the next day and invaded my privacy while stealing. It was terrible to trust the hotel and feel that no one cared. I hope this helps someone, and that the hotel acts to stop this crime. Be careful with your things and lock them in your suitcases. The hotel itself was okay. It may be a five-star hotel, maybe three, but with the stealing it gets one star.

There was no beach here, just a rocky ledge, so you had to take transport to a nearby beach or walk to the neighboring resort. It's a long walk if you have mobility issues. We arrived at 10 pm to completely dark grounds, got lost, and had to use our phones as flashlights before finding the lobby, where reception pointed the way. I asked for another pillow and was told it wasn't possible. I won't comment on the food, because, you know, it's Cuba. But the male waiters served three tables of men who arrived after me before me, and only waited on me after they were told in Spanish. I was traveling alone as a woman. The drinks were so watered down they were like water, so we bought liquor at a store. The grounds weren't great either, with garbage and knocked-over cans left for days. I won't return.

We waited until 4 pm for our rooms, and the stay wasn't worry-free. The hotel looked nice, but my safe didn't work, and neither did the phone, so I had to walk back to the lobby to report it. Someone came and fixed the safe, and also the bar fridge, which I then realized was broken too. We were told the beach was next door at the sister hotel. No problem, until we found the next morning that its bar service wasn't available to guests from our hotel. The front desk confirmed that was the policy. A couple days later, we lost power in our room for a few hours one day and about eight hours the next. Then we had no hot water for a few days. I tried to speak with the hotel manager, but he was never available at the front desk. Overall, not a great experience. Travelers looking for an easy stay should stay away.

The entertainment was very good, and the entertainers made a point of getting to know everyone. Some staff were good, but others made me feel like an inconvenience. Most walkway lights didn't work, so it was hard to see at night. The food was the same most nights, and the rooms weren't cleaned properly. The maids seemed more interested in seeing if you'd get them beer while they worked. Not sure we'd come back.
