Hotel Paseo Habana

The rooms are fairly spacious, but the bathrooms are basic, and the hotel is below average in an acceptable part of town. Water was a major problem during our stay. It wasn't reliably available during the day, and at night it was shut off completely unless you went to reception in your nightdress and asked them to turn it back on. That's annoying and unacceptable. Breakfast was average, and most of the staff seemed inattentive and not very interested in helping. The AC units were so loud that sleeping well was unlikely. I'd suggest booking a Casa Particular instead. They're cheaper, much more comfortable, and often the owner can help you out. Sorry, but Hotel Paseo Habana is a no go.

I really enjoyed my stay and would come back. The hotel was spotless, with excellent air conditioning, a lovely garden, and friendly, helpful staff. It's a renovated old mansion with a guard patrolling the grounds, and is connected with the hospitals on Paseo. I could change money at a favorable rate with their help, and internet cost 50 CUP/hr. Breakfast was simple but good. Most of the other guests seemed to be exchange doctors from Columbia, Venezeual, and Vietnam, though it was also a good place to meet Cubans. The location worked well for seeing Vedado, with restaurants nearby on the Paseo and close to the Malecon. A taxi downtown was 800 CUP (low) to 1500 CUP (high), or the children's train from the Riviera Hotel ran downtown every hour for 40 CUP. The posted single rate was about 2000 CUP, less than a casa.

I had a great time here with my undergraduate colleagues and will definitely come back on my own. The hotel is in one of the safest parts of La Havana, which was the best part for me. Great people, great service, and great A/C!

People in Cuba are dying without food, medicine, or freedom. I don't think it's a safe place for tourists.
