Horizontes Los Caneyes Hotel

The condition of the hotel didn't match its online advertising, which we found misleading. Transportation was uncomfortable and overpriced, and some staff members were unprofessional enough to raise concerns about security and guest welfare. Cleanliness and hygiene were deplorable. Our rooms were dirty, the facilities unsanitary, and there was a persistent bad smell throughout the property. We also saw many pests, including rodents and insects. Food, drinks, electricity, and water were consistently below par. This was deeply disappointing and fell short of even the most basic expectations for a hotel stay.

We stopped here for a prearranged buffet lunch on the way from Santa Clara to Varadero. The location was quite nice, and the food and drinks were pretty good for what they were. I can't comment on the rooms. Service was okay, since the staff only took drink orders and everything else was self-service at the buffet.

The dinner buffet was great, while breakfast wasn't as good. Our cabin was clean but basic, and the cocktails at the bar were nice. Service was good, but charging by the hour for Wi-Fi felt out of step with 2024. In every other Cuban hotel I stayed in, it was included.

The dining hall felt cavernous and rather soulless, with the usual long buffet counters and a range of dishes. For breakfast, I'd go for the made-to-order omelettes with salad. There's a lovely spot outside where you can eat. The hotel itself is comfortable, with a large pool and attractive tropical landscaping. The quiet, well-appointed bedrooms are in indigenous Indian-style thatched units, each with about six rooms. The pool got rather busy in the middle of the afternoon, with Day Pass guests playing ball games or getting very affectionate.
