I arrived around 6 pm and was told the hostel had overbooked by 150%, leaving me and three other guests without beds. After more than an hour and a half of moving people around, they “found” me a bed, which turned out to mean sharing a double bed with a stranger. They said I’d have my own bed the next night, but when I asked reception the next day, there still wasn’t one and they wanted me to share again. Only after I made a fuss did they “find” me somewhere else, about 100 meters away. I don’t even think it was part of the hostel, just a worker’s personal house. What’s wrong with this place? How does it have 4.6 stars on Google? It may be the cheapest place in Santa Maria, but it’s not worth it. You’d be better off with a blanket on the beach.

I met some great people, and the staff were decent. There aren’t many backpacker options on Sal anyway, so do what you have to. But this place costs far too much for what you get: it’s very basic, with no aircon or fans. The dorm is tiny, the bathroom is disgusting for 14 people, and it gets crazy hot at night.

There’s a nice third-floor balcony where you can make your own food, plus a refrigerator. The room door was a bit hard to open, but the beach is only about 600 meters away, and the center with tourist spots is about 500 meters away. People were sweet and nice, both the other tourists and the staff. I was surprised to find out I had to share the bathroom and toilet with other guests instead of having my own. The shower only had cold water, but there was WiFi and USB charging.

The staff were amazing, and it’s close to the center and beach. Cheap area, best price in town.

I couldn’t sleep at night, it was dirty, and the owner was very rude. The area felt bad and was far from the center. I was charged 420 euros for four nights and had to share a room with 12 people.
