Pôr do Sol

This is a quiet, cosy place with a great swimming pool, about 20-25 minutes outside busy Praia. Por do Sol is a two-star accommodation, so don't expect five-star luxury. The host is keen to tell you about Cabo Verde and often suggests trying the local drink Grogue, which is readily available. The rest of the staff are friendly too. A stairway goes down to a semi-private pebble beach shared only with the neighbours, good for swimming and snorkeling. Cidade de Velha is a pleasant 10-15 minute walk away, with beachside restaurants and historic sites. A good budget stay, with cash paid on arrival.

Such a great place to relax! The people were really kind, and the chef made delicious food. We woke up to birds and the sound of the sea. At night, you'll want repellent, but the room has air conditioning so you can sleep comfortably. We also got lucky: the owner and his mates performed a "serenata" with Cape Verdean songs, Mornas and Coladeras.

After booking through Booking and trying to check in, we were told there was no room available after all. They claimed they'd sent an email to let us know, but no email had arrived. It's awful to be counting on a place to sleep and then have to look for somewhere else. I don't recommend it, since there are other places in the area.
