Hotel Sýkora

The kids’ corner at the restaurant was great, and we really liked the pizza. 👍

We picked this quiet spot as a base for day trips between Pilsen and Prague, both about an hour and a half away. It had everything we needed, and the hotel’s history is on display, which adds to its modest, local feel. The restaurant downstairs is the center of things, and check-in happens there too. The staff made us feel at home and did everything they could to make our stay comfortable. There was enough to keep our two kids occupied between outings. We were surprised by how much there was to see at Hrad Krivoklat right next door. The town information center is about three minutes away, and its friendly staff can point you toward activities in town and at the castle. If you leave your car in the hotel parking lot, the bus stop is across the street. The train station, about ten minutes up the road, is the better option for getting to Prague. The hotel is on the town’s main street, so there’s traffic, but it wasn’t too much for us. The kitchen staff were fantastic. Even on our first night, when the restaurant was very busy, our food came quickly and was both delicious and nicely presented. The Quad family room was what the hotel website showed, so I haven’t included photos of it. One small issue: the parking area behind the hotel by the stream sometimes smelled of sulfur. It was noticeable, but not overwhelming. The hotel can’t control it, and thankfully we couldn’t smell it in our room overlooking the stream and hills, or elsewhere inside the hotel or restaurant.

08/05/2022: The restaurant is in a handy spot, and the meat with potatoes tasted good. But the pizza was really poor, and they didn’t have any chili oil for it. The place felt cold and empty, and our waiter seemed bored, unfriendly, and slow.

The service was lovely, and I really enjoyed the flavors. When we visited, the menu included game like wild boar and deer, cooked with seasonal ingredients such as chestnuts and berries in creative ways. My only gripe is that the meat portions could’ve been a bit larger. Then it would’ve been perfect.
