A complete disaster. Dad had booked a weekend directly with the owner and paid a deposit. When we arrived Friday afternoon, a woman outside shouted at us, asking who we were. After we explained, she yelled that the owner had messed things up and failed to write down the reservation, then blamed Dad for not calling. The owner never came out to apologize. The woman kept shouting and being unpleasant. Even if she had eventually found us an empty room, we would have left anyway. The way we were treated and the outside of the guesthouse were both horrifying. We drove 75 km back home.

We sat in the car outside the guesthouse for three hours waiting for staff. When the owner finally came back from work, she was unpleasant, handed us the room keys, and told us nothing else. Inside, the rooms looked nothing like the website photos. There were urine stains on the chair, a bad smell, and the sheet they gave us had holes. We had paid for two rooms, but when we asked for them, the owner said, “You are a family, you get one room.” We wanted the extra room so our two grown daughters could have some privacy, and they were both very upset by this. There were cats in the restaurant, it smelled like a cat toilet, and the bar was meant to be open but wasn’t working at all. Across from our room was a supposed kitchen with only a dirty microwave and kettle, as if someone had picked them up at a landfill.

The place itself is beautiful and quiet, with a large garden, but that’s about all it has going for it. We spent twenty minutes trying to find someone, then waited while the owner, who seemed to be under the influence of alcohol, got the key into the lock and let us in. There was only cold water in the room on the first day. The restaurant and bar were both closed. Such a shame, since it’s otherwise a beautiful place.

This is the kind of place for people who love animals and want to get away from the bustle of bigger cities. There are lots of animals, lovely nature, and above all, peace, though you might hear a rooster crow or geese cackle now and then. Don’t come expecting luxury, that’s what a 5* hotel is for. The owner is very nice, breakfast is very good, and the people in town are lovely too. We found what we’d been missing for a long time, and I’d love to return next year.
