We stayed in the Sassnitz holiday apartment, and the week left us disappointed. The house is in a quiet spot, but it's remote: Binz takes about 45 minutes by car, with frequent traffic jams in Bergen. Altefähr's beach is basically a big sandbox with steps down into the water, so it doesn't feel much like being by the sea. You collect the key from a key safe, and a contact person is reachable by mobile. The layout makes the apartment a poor fit for eight people. Upstairs and downstairs alike, one bedroom is a passage to the bedroom behind it, so there's little privacy if someone has to walk through your room to get to the toilet. The rooms are spacious, but there aren't many closets. There's no blackout curtain, so we woke early, and some insect screens would have helped. There were already plenty of animal residents when we arrived. At least the thick outer walls kept the temperature pleasant indoors. The website says there's a washer and dryer in the common room, but there wasn't. We had to drive to a laundromat in Stralsund, then dry our clothes on chairs in the apartment. An outdoor line is no use when it rains, and there's no drying rack inside. There isn't a good way to dry towels either. The place feels neglected, with a lot broken or worn. Both showers had problems with the fittings and brackets, though thankfully they were repaired or replaced that same day. The upstairs shower door doesn't close properly, the doors have heavy rust stains, and the downstairs shower has dark marks. Temperature is controlled at the main water supply beside the toilet, and the bathroom cabinet handles have an ugly black coating. The bathrooms are poorly maintained overall. The garden is nicely shaded by trees and a good size, but the warning signs about using it at your own risk make sense: the trampoline zipper is broken and dangerous. The common room has games, but the pool cues are broken and taped together, and the table is worn. The ping-pong balls don't bounce and the net is broken. Cooking, especially for eight, is difficult with such a minimal kitchen. The pans are scratched with rounded bottoms, and of the two oven racks one doesn't fit; there's no baking tray. We found wine glasses but no corkscrew or bottle opener. There are no bedside lamps and the lighting is weak, so we read by phone flashlight. There are two TVs, one in the living room and another in the downstairs bedroom. Wi-Fi was very slow and unreliable. Our children couldn't listen to audiobooks on a tablet, so we had to use our phones as a hotspot. With so many problems, we can't recommend this rental.
