Ahorn Waldhotel Altenberg

We came back in summer 2025 after having a reasonable stay here a few years earlier, but the hotel had declined a lot. The pool was often packed, with no lifeguard overseeing safety. We saw small children jumping in chaotically, and our son had concerns about people jumping from the sides. Internet access was intermittent, and the entertainment was limited. The table football cost 1 Euro and didn't work, and Yogi wasn't there at all during our week. Food was especially disappointing: Schnitzel was the only reasonable option, and drinks were hugely overpriced. Several dishes that had been free on our earlier visit now cost extra. In its current state, I wouldn't recommend a holiday here.

The staff were extremely welcoming, and I enjoyed the organized activities. There's plenty for kids indoors and outside. The food is solid, though charging for non-alcoholic drinks in the evening feels like a lot given the prices. Parking is also expensive, and having to pay for it feels steep. The property and rooms could use repairs and a deep clean, but they're generally in decent shape. The playgrounds need some fixing too, and it would have been helpful to know the outdoor jumping pad wouldn't be switched on.

We booked the wellness package for a relaxing weekend, and it was really lovely. The hotel is very welcoming to children and dogs, so expect the occasional family and their pooch passing by. As is common in Germany, the kids and dogs we saw were well behaved. In February there was snow everywhere, even though Dresden had none, which made for a perfect winter break. It also looks like it could be a great summer spot. You can't get here by train, but there is a bus stop right outside the entrance, so public transport is definitely an option.

The staff were great, the pools were clean, and breakfast was a tasty, generous buffet. The beer was good too, especially the Benediktiner rather than the "Pils". The location is lovely for relaxing, with nature all around, and there's a bus stop right by the hotel. Our room was clean and standard, though the bathroom was very small. At Glück-Auf restaurant, I was hoping for fresh local food, given the woods nearby. I understand there weren't many guests, but frozen pizza was disappointing when fresh pasta with mushrooms and cream sauce, or other quick and tasty dishes, would have been easy options.
