We came for a wedding weekend, and the rooms were simple but clean. Breakfast was modest, yet reliably good. The dinner was the real highlight for all of us, absolutely outstanding, with nothing to complain about.

There’s parking, but be sure to reserve ahead. The restaurant serves hearty Swabian favorites like game, roast beef and Spätzle, plus fresh salads, with good beer and really friendly service. Sadly, it’s due to close at the end of the year.

The meat dishes were consistently excellent, which seems to be the kitchen’s strength. The rest of our Boxing Day meal was much less successful: the salad dressing was far too salty, the beetroot was mushy and seemed like it might have come from a cooked vacuum pack, and the fries arrived cold and limp. We were a party of 14, and the Christmas menu had plenty of choices for meat lovers. But when the only vegetarian asked about a meat-free meal, the options offered were salmon or a “fitness plate” with breaded turkey breast. We were told special requests couldn’t be handled on Christmas Day. Someone else asked for Spätzle instead of fries and didn’t press the point. The vegetarian was eventually given Spätzle, though the salad was left off at first and only brought after we asked. Service was polite, but still inadequate. Maybe the food and menu are better balanced at other times of year, but I wouldn’t recommend it for Christmas dinner. We won’t be coming back during the rest of the year either. You’re paying for the meal, and with nearly 20 dishes there should be at least one straightforward option for a vegetarian or someone who doesn’t eat meat. There weren’t any vegetables on the menu apart from salad.

The toilets were usable, but didn’t feel up to modern standards, so that’s where the star comes off. Otherwise, we had a great celebration for our 80th birthday here. The venue sits nicely on the edge of Amtzell and has plenty of parking. Our private room was lovely, and the champagne reception was well organized. Guests were very pleased with the set menu: salad to start, then pork tenderloin in creamy mushroom sauce with homemade spaetzle, tasty vegetables, and crispy fries for the children. We finished with ice cream and fresh fruit, which was delicious too. We took a short walk up Kapellenberg, and the children could also visit the nearby skate park. The chef is skilled and the staff worked efficiently.
