Hotel Blüchertal

The rooms have been recently renovated, but our stay was less than ideal. We had to check ourselves in at night, and the hotel is a 25 minute walk uphill from the restaurants and shops. The room was freezing, the vending machine didn't work properly, and the person at the front desk in the morning wasn't very helpful.

We got into the building with a room key from a lock box, then eventually found our room. At check-in, we learned there was no Internet or phone service, which meant we couldn't reach a taxi. It also left us wondering what would happen in an emergency, or if we lost the key and couldn't get back inside. I asked about the lack of service using the ring camera we spotted on our way out. A woman answered and said, without apologizing, "the Internet might work tomorrow. Phones never work." That was all. How can a customer service business operate with no customer service? It felt like Faulty Towers without Lord Faulty or Manuel. The room itself was ok, but I could never recommend this place. We'd definitely look for somewhere more normally run in town next time. It's a 20 minute walk uphill from town and the nearest shop or restaurant, and there's only self check-in, with no staff around during the day or evening. There are little notes posted around explaining how to use the coffee and drink machines. The drink machine had incorrect prices and wouldn't dispense, which made the place feel odd and vacuous. Is this business actually approved to operate like this?

We visited in November, when most places are closed. During the off season it's self-service only, with weekend breakfast and coffee as the only food, and the vending machine was empty in winter. The place was very clean, quiet and comfortable. Make sure to watch the check-in video, though, or it may be confusing. Otherwise, it's nice and well placed on the Rhein.

The people around town weren't very nice. This hotel is quite a hike uphill from the train station, and food near it is hit or miss depending on the season and time. Get something to eat while you're near the river.
