For her birthday, I treated my girlfriend to English tea, and we had a wonderful time. The garden is spectacular, and she said the scones were the best she'd ever had.

A perfect four o'clock tea, with lovely scones and delicious cloated cream and jam.

**Update April 2024** We visited the gardens last year, then came back this year for High Tea. It poured all day, but the tea was excellent. Book online ahead so the staff can prepare, then just show up and enjoy. For €30 per person, you get a pot of your chosen tea, three kinds of little open-faced sandwiches, a rather good scone with clotted cream, jam and marmalade, plus several small pastries. It’s a lovely way to slow down, nibble and sip through the afternoon, and leave feeling content. Highly recommended! On our earlier visit, the gardens were between blooms in early May. They have a nice layout and are mature, though they could use some refurbishment. That wasn't a major distraction. Allow maybe 2-3 hours to see everything, have coffee, and visit the shop. Admission at €10 per adult felt high, and the trinkets in the shop even more so. The cafe was also quite expensive for simple, not above-average food. I can't speak to the B&B, but I'd wager it's similarly overpriced.

The gardens are in better condition than on recent visits and are worth a trip. There's a large new car park and a bigger rose-sales area, and the large perennial bed now has lots of roses, which is unusual. The place is getting more commercial, though. Reception could use more staff.

It's a lovely spot for a peaceful walk on a sunny day, with delightful gardens and a restaurant that has a nice range of dishes and desserts. I tried the classic teatime with scones, but was disappointed that it only came with a choice of standard commercial tea bags. They also have special herbal and floral teas, but those are only available with the more expensive teatime menu served in a teapot.
