Hotel Schillingshof

We enjoyed everything. The hotel is comfortable and nice, the buffet was really tasty, and you’ll need to reserve a restaurant because it gets very crowded.

Hotel Schillingshof, Bad Kohlgrub, Bavaria We were lodged here during our time in Bavaria. It’s rated four stars, though I’d put it closer to 3-3.5, and it’s pretty much out in the countryside. Check-in was reasonably quick and efficient. The balcony was lovely, especially in spring, though mine looked out at the back. The bathroom was fairly modern, with a good shower, but the toilet placement might be awkward for tall or larger people. The room was somewhat comfortable, with heavy old-fashioned chairs. The floors looked dated, very 1960s, but were generally clean. The bed was another matter. A hard mattress is fine, but the pillows felt like prison bedding, the covers weren’t much better, and there were only two pillows for a double bed. For food, I tried to get lunch at 11:30 before we had to be somewhere at 1, but the restaurant only opened at noon and showed no flexibility. There was nothing else available, so you’d have to go hungry. Breakfast was a decent sized buffet with the basic foods, fine for western tastes. If you need Asian options, bring cup noodles. The food overall was decent, but service needs work. Two petite Asian women ran the place with hardly a smile and came across as empresses or dragon dowagers. Tables were cleared slowly, and if you couldn’t find a seat, tough luck. Parking is available covered, for a fee, or outside under the stars. WiFi was very unreliable. The hotel network worked for a day, then I had to switch to events, and that was still on and off. Luckily, I had roaming. By car, Murnau is about 15 minutes away, an amazing town for visitors with market shops and more. The property is beautiful, with lovely mountain scenery from the back door, and the rooms are really well managed. The food spread was also very good, and I liked the humble man making grilled food. Still, the staff’s behavior spoiled the experience. I don’t know why the restaurant staff were so arrogant. I’ve never seen such bad behavior from restaurant staff anywhere, and they need soft skills training. The hotel’s attitude and hospitality weren’t great. I wouldn’t return, purely because of the poor hospitality.
