Hotel Schauinsland

The view from our room was stunning. Early in the morning, watching fog lift from the hills as the sun came up was especially lovely. It was also a real plus that the price included my two Shiba Inus. I’d give the location five stars and the room and service four, though I can see other visitors rating things differently. The owners leave a personal impression, and their way of trying to host guests more sustainably came up a lot in our conversations. If you’re interested, talking with the host can give you a sense of the hotel’s sustainability ideas. I agreed with them, though I still have questions about how the front office works. This place may not suit you if you expect a conventional hotel with standard rooms and front desk service. But if you’re open to a creative, ongoing experiment in sustainability and alternative hospitality, you may enjoy it. The host is a musician and songwriter, and he might play his own songs at breakfast. Parts of the hotel feel like a museum from the 70s and 80s, and the owner is happy to show you around if you ask. That’s why I rate the rooms and service a four and the location a five. Why not go see what you think?

We really enjoyed our stay. The location is great, with lovely views, and it’s well placed for hikes. Europa-Park, Zip-Lines, Cuckoo Clock, and plenty of other places are a short drive away. We booked two double rooms, both very spacious and spotless. Breakfast was great, and the service was splendid. The owner was involved and around most of the time, keeping an eye on the details to make things a good experience for everyone.

The scenery is beautiful, the atmosphere is lovely, and nights are very quiet. Our room was large and comfortable. We did have a bit of an incident with bugs, though, because the windows and balcony didn’t have an iron screen or fence to keep them out.

The food is included and was really tasty. The hotel is wonderful, and its style reminded me of an old Viking place in the beautiful "Black forrest".
