The food at Schmalzerhisli was fresh, delicious, and outstanding, and the warm welcome made our visit feel special. Its setting in the Northern Black Forest is unique, with breathtaking views. Highly recommended, we felt completely at ease there! 🌲

The Hisli is an interesting place to start a hike, though its position at this otherwise idyllic height felt surprisingly unspectacular to me. Coming up from the valley, you might imagine a subalpine paradise where wheat beer and lard flow freely, so the reality can disappoint. Climbing or driving to 700m just to look at forest isn’t an obvious draw. If the main reason for coming is the charm of an idyllic high-altitude setting, Harkhof or Kreuzsattelhütte would suit that better.

You order and serve yourself, but that didn’t take away from the meal. The food and drinks were tasty, and the prices were good.

I’ve been coming here with my family for three years, and it’s a really lovely place with great food. The service is friendly, but they always comment when we leave at 6:30 pm, which gets annoying.
