Design-Villa Waldfrieden

The hiking nearby was a real highlight for us. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are only a short drive away, and Dresden is about an hour away by car. We loved the region and plan to return, but we won't stay at Villa Waldfrieden again because the price didn't feel justified. Breakfast was excellent and had lots of variety. The restaurant food tasted very good to us adults, and the staff were consistently friendly and tried to handle requests about child-friendly meals and allergies. Still, dinner there every day seems a poor fit for families with younger children, especially at those prices. The menu was quite limited and upscale. Our room fell short of what we expected for a four-star hotel at this price. It was small and dark enough that we needed artificial light during the day, and the furnishings and decor didn't meet the standard we'd expected. With temperatures above 30 degrees during the day and 27 at night, the lack of air conditioning was uncomfortable. The drains also smelled musty for the first few days. Cleaning happened only once in seven days, and it wasn't clear what had been done. The beds weren't made, and the hand soap wasn't refilled. After the hot weather, we asked for fresh bed linen, but they changed it on only one of the two beds. The balcony could also be reached from the hallway, which made us feel our privacy was compromised, so we kept the curtains mostly closed and the room felt even darker. The hotel is between a busy road and a railway line, something noise-sensitive guests should factor in.

There are some lovely hikes and via ferrata routes nearby, so the villa makes a good base for getting outdoors. Breakfast was a real plus, with an excellent spread, make-your-own omelets, homemade smoothies, and a remarkable range of good fruit juices, even cabbage juice 😉. Each room in the villa has its own character, and the accommodation itself is pleasant. Meals and breakfast are served at the hotel next door, and guests can use the sauna free of charge at another hotel in the same village. The price did seem a bit high, though. Wi-Fi doesn't reach the rooms, and the connection in the restaurant isn't always dependable. Even when you're trying to unplug on holiday, that can make it inconvenient to plan your itinerary.

The room was the Waldfrieden FutjiSan, with charming and quite extravagant furnishings. My husband and I stayed one night, enjoyed a sauna session, then had a delicious dinner at Helvita before going on to Krippen for a few more days. We liked the sauna enough that we wanted to use it again today, since the website says external guests can use it too. Ms. Sturm at reception turned us away very rudely. We were disappointed and think the website information is inaccurate: it doesn't say that external access depends on occupancy. We won't return. What a shame! :-(

We stayed in the Taj Mahal section and found it really relaxing, with a view of the Elbe River. The themed rooms are spacious and beautifully furnished, more like apartments without a kitchen. The bathroom was sensational, and there was a small balcony. Breakfast is served across the street.
