Hotel Gasthaus Rottner

A friend invited us to dinner here, and it turned into an experience of a lifetime. We had paired wines with every course, including a Lavender Sparkling Wine, a small steak tartar bite, foie gras parfait, and then a fantastic venison saddle with sides cooked just right. The service was exceptional. I wish I could eat here every night!

The rooms are modern and clean, with comfortable beds, and the staff were very pleasant. Getting into town takes some planning: a taxi costs around the mid €20s, or it’s a seven-minute walk to the U bahn and then one change. The bathrooms have glass doors and strong extractor fans, which isn’t great for nighttime use if you’re sharing. Breakfast was okay. The food in the 'ordinary' a la carte restaurant was edible, but felt like an awkward mix of pub grub and fine dining, and wasn’t cheap.

The staff were great, polite, and the restaurant was very clean and tucked away somewhere peaceful. But the food is what really got me. Even the regular side of the restaurant served dishes with intense, clean flavors that just explode on your tongue. The pictures don’t do it justice, and I’d happily eat here every day. It’s a real dining experience, and I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about it. They also have a Michelin-star side, which I’m hoping to try in the coming weeks. Everything went well during our short stay, though the place had a very strange, spooky feel. Several of us had rooms apart from each other, and the next morning we compared stories. Alone in my single room, I kept glancing over my shoulder because I thought I saw someone in the corner of my eye. I left the TV on so I could settle down. Then in the morning, a knock on my door woke me up, which was lucky because my alarm hadn’t gone off. I asked the girls, but none of them had knocked. One of them heard knocks on her door about three times, but each time she opened it, nobody was there. Another said the room felt like it had a very specific animal presence, like a Pit Bull dog was in there. Very odd. We also all thought the wagon with the dolls at the entrance to the block of hotel rooms was really creepy 😂. We didn’t see any of this as a bad experience, though. It was actually entertaining 😆
