The rooms are tiny, and the mattresses were hard and uncomfortable. Dinner was cold and tasteless; when I complained, the waitress snapped at me. The business owner was downright nasty to my husband and me when I raised it with them. Then her son threatened legal action because we’d written honest reviews. Stay far away.

The owner was generous, accommodating, and kind, and breakfast was stellar, with local options and amazing service. From our windows we had a perfect view of the gardens, whose stillness and calm seemed to relax my whole nervous system. The beautiful accommodations made our stay at the Balance Hotel a highlight of our Europe trip. We’d highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay near the Black Forest.

Maria was a wonderful host, and the Balance Hotel felt like a peaceful, restful oasis. Our rooms looked out over the ruins of Burg Baden and the town’s hamlet, a magical, storybook view. Breakfast was plentiful, with lots of meat and cheese and scrambled eggs. The town is a hidden gem, and our stay was much too short. We’ll definitely come back.
