Engel Obertal Wellness & Genuss Resort

I've been coming to Engel Obertal for a while when the days get colder and darker. Somehow it makes the rainy season feel like a treat. The restaurant, garden, wellness area, and gym all feel like another world. The gym is especially impressive, in a beautiful round glass foyer with panoramic views and the latest machines, all kept in excellent condition. There are several saunas and pools to choose from, including indoor, outdoor, natural water, and saltwater pools, so the spa is genuinely relaxing. Service is warm and professional, the food is excellent, and there are lots of healthy options. I always leave feeling recharged and grateful. A real gem in the Black Forest.

The hotel looks beautiful, from the lobby to the rest of the property, and the natural views around it are stunning. Everyone we dealt with was welcoming, and room service was good too. Our June stay was difficult at night because it was hot and the room had no air conditioning or other cooling system. The hotel brought us a portable fan, which was a kind and attentive gesture, but it didn't cool the room enough. We had to leave the windows open, and without screens, flies, bees, and mosquitoes came in. Even with the windows open, the room stayed uncomfortably warm, and we struggled to fall asleep for several nights. I don't know why there was no cooling option, perhaps it's related to reducing environmental impact in the natural surroundings.

The setting is quiet, peaceful, and scenic, and the grounds and gardens are immaculately kept. Our room was spacious, beautifully decorated, and very comfortable. The hotel also has designated rooms for guests with dogs. Staff were friendly and professional throughout. We enjoyed a delicious lunch, and the five-course dinner was on a par with what you'd expect at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The spa areas were relaxing and a great experience. We had to leave very early, so unfortunately couldn't try breakfast.

The wellness area was spectacular, and it's easy to see why it has won awards. We came with our three-year-old and found the whole stay comfortable and enjoyable for the family. Dining was a highlight too. We could choose at short notice between the five-course menu and à la carte, which suited us perfectly, and the food was outstanding. Breakfast left nothing to wish for. The modern rooms were spotless, the staff made us feel very welcome, and the beautiful location rounded things out. A five-star stay all the way, and we can't wait to come back.
