The restaurant was the real surprise. In my humble opinion, it deserves a Michelin star. I had the best cream of asparagus soup I’ve ever tasted, followed by perfectly cooked sea bream fillets with red rice. My wife had the Frankish boiled beef with root vegetables and a potato dumpling, and it was delicious. Breakfast was excellent too, with lots of choice and very fresh food. Our refurbished double room above the restaurant faced the street but was very quiet. It was spacious enough for two large suitcases, with a desk, small lounge, wardrobe, hanging space, storage, and plenty of power points. The beds were very comfortable, the heating worked well, and we could open a window. The room was simply but adequately furnished. The staff were friendly, and check-in was easy. The hotel used to be an old mill and still has some of its history in the building. It’s close to the town centre and has its own parking lot for a small fee. Excellent hotel and great value!

The location is great for the town centre and local sights, and breakfast was excellent. The rooms are on the small side, but usable. Our shower was awkward: it was high off the floor, making it easy to slip when getting out, and the taps left very little room. I’d like to see a no-smoking rule in the outdoor seating areas. Sitting in other people’s smoke is unpleasant. A smoking area should be set well away from the rest.
Handy for the centre, but this is a pretty basic hotel. There’s no lift or air conditioning, and when it’s hot, leaving the windows open makes the room very noisy because they face the bar’s outdoor tables.
The local people’s patronage seems to confirm the hotel’s value and quality. It sits between the edge of the historic centre and a fast-running stream, with views of elegant antiquity from every window and whimsical touches inside. The food follows the same feel, traditional Franconian dishes with a fusion flair. Staff were friendly with guests and clearly good friends with each other. That positive energy greets you at the door and even reaches the discreetly zen massage chair on the stair landing. I usually yawn when someone calls a place a real gem, but this one really is.
Old, but full of charm, this cute little hotel has an attached restaurant. The staff are great and breakfast is outstanding. It seems family-owned. I stayed three nights and will probably return if I visit Wagner’s city again :)
