Malerwinkel Hotel

We’ve been travelling to Bensberg for over 40 years, and this is the best value hotel we’ve found, with the friendliest staff.

Breakfast was good for €9, and the room was always very clean, with a sweet treat and a bottle of water waiting on arrival. The rooms are okay, though a little small, and some have small single beds. The staff were very friendly.

I came to spend an evening at Mediterana Spa, which Google said was a 30-minute walk away. The walk there is entirely downhill, including a steep hill, so that was fine. After sweating and snoozing at the spa for a few hours, I quickly decided against walking back. Luckily, the local train from Neuenweg to Bensberg does most of the uphill work for you. The hotel has a lot of charm, and check-in was easy thanks to the very friendly receptionist, whose English was excellent. She showed me to my room, which I might not have found on my own. It was simple, with a single bed and an en-suite bathroom, and very reasonably priced. Breakfast was just €9, though I had to leave early for a train and couldn't have it. Bensberg mixes traditional fachwerke with modern brutalist buildings, a bit like many resort towns from the 70s and 80s. The U-1 runs straight from Bensberg to central Köln, so it's a great way to get away from the city, especially if you enjoy a good sauna. We really enjoyed staying here. The rooms were cute and very clean, and breakfast was delicious, especially the fresh, tasty bread. A very nice hotel.
