Hotel-Pension Funk

The shared facilities were kept clean, and my modest single room had everything I needed. I also really liked the breakfast room, which deserves a leisurely morning. The Art Deco details carry through the place, from the stained glass and cozy interior to the grand entrance hall and cast-iron lift. It’s a magical hotel, conveniently close to Zoologischer garten station, with S and U Bahn connections that quickly reach the city centre. I’ll stay here again when I’m back in Berlin.

A bakery and coffee shop are just a few doors away, and there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. We visited in late October, when there weren’t many bars open near the hotel, but getting into central Berlin was easy. The U-Bahn station is about a three-minute walk, then roughly five minutes by train to other parts of the city. The neighborhood felt safe when we got back late, with shops like Ralph Lauren and Marco Polo nearby. Our room had a huge window, and the classic furniture made it feel special. The building itself is beautiful and still has its original features.

Decorated in a way that really brought the 1930s to mind, this place has loads of character and atmosphere. It was once the residence of silent film star Asta Nielsen. The rooms were comfortable, the staff friendly, and the location was great. A truly unusual hotel. I’d gladly come back and recommend it.

We loved staying somewhere authentic with a story behind it, and we’d come back. Our room even had a couch, along with a comfortable bed and plenty of wardrobe space. It had high ceilings, big windows with long curtains, and wooden floorboards. The shower facilities were basic but good, and breakfast was decent.
