It's quiet and peaceful, and seems like a nice spot for families with kids. The hotel sits below a castle in the Bavarian forest, but the interior is so old it feels like spending a night in a museum. There may be no staff around after 10 or 11 pm, and you could even be the only person there. Watch out for ghosts 😉
The castle view from the patio and fountain is superb, the surroundings are spectacular, and the staff, especially Jirina, were very friendly. There's also plenty of free parking. Still, the place feels tired and underinvested. The furniture is old and soiled rather than antique, and the maintenance looks like cheap patchwork. The decor seems stuck in the 1980s, and my room had no TV. There was only a bath with a shower head, no separate shower, and the Wi-Fi was slow and unreliable. Breakfast, apparently from Penny/Lidl, was disappointing. I can't recommend staying here. Some reviews refer to the Castle itself rather than the Burgstall accommodation.
For one night, this is a great stop for culture vultures who want to stay in an old castle. You might love the al fresco continental breakfast and not mind having no TV or air conditioning. But if no evening restaurant or bar is a problem for you, this place won't suit you. Once you've had the experience, move on. That's why I gave it four stars.
I've come back for a second stay at this fantastic family hotel. It's exceptionally clean, and the service is warm and hospitable. Highly recommend it.
A genuinely special place, with a great old castle.
