The breakfast alone is worth a look at the photos, and the restaurant does really good local food with a twist. We also found the staff keen to make our stay enjoyable. Haus Schönichen is a lovely place to stay, and I’d ask for room No 12. The heath is right next door, so you can head out hiking straight from there.

I haven’t stayed overnight, but lunch here was quite nice, and I often stop by to buy the Knipp. There’s a trail that starts by the hotel and restaurant, and I’d suggest parking there or across the road to walk it. It’s often quieter than the route on the other side towards totengrund, while being just as beautiful. You start beside a sweet little stream and fields, then reach the heath before going a bit uphill into the woods. Very peaceful.

A quiet, calm spot for a weekend away. I don’t speak German, so communicating with the staff was a little hard, but I got what I needed in the end.
