Hotel Stadt Breisach

The service is friendly, and the breakfast buffet is generously stocked. The food is good too. The scenic location overlooks the Rhine Valley, with France, the vogesen hills, and neuf brisach across the Rhine.

I had a horrible experience here while attending a German Society of Cardiology (DGK) meeting. The hotel is well-equipped, but I never want to return. I arrived at 12 pm to work on a presentation and my computer, even though I knew check-in started at 2 pm. The receptionist couldn't find my name because the booking was under Dr. Hosen. I asked her to check again, and the organizer confirmed it by phone. She refused to check and was very rude to the organizer. After several calls, she found my name and seemed very annoyed about it. I went out around the city and came back at 2 pm. Everyone else was checking in smoothly, but I was the only one who couldn't, because my room supposedly needed five minutes of cleaning. I ended up waiting 45 minutes and was the last one after all the rooms had been allocated. The receptionist was never friendly or polite and didn't seem to care how to treat guests. I felt completely ignored and encountered what I saw as resistant behavior. If you're international, be careful, you might be treated differently.

I've seen a few hotels in my time, but rarely such upsetting service. After two disappointing experiences, I'm not coming back, and that's why I'd give this place only two stars despite thinking it could rate much better. The first time, I booked breakfast for two by email with the reservations team. When we arrived that morning, they couldn't find our reservation. I showed them the emails and we were allowed in, but nobody seated or greeted us. The serving staff said to sit wherever we could find space. That's okay, but I think a restaurant of this kind should seat and welcome its guests. I asked for a table with a view. I understand that couldn't be guaranteed, but there were tables available or about to be cleared. Staff said there was no availability, even though the whole upper terrace section was empty. We sat there hoping someone would prepare a table, but nobody acknowledged us. We stayed for breakfast, but the buffet was quite small and items weren't replenished as often as you'd hope. On my second visit, I stopped by in the afternoon for coffee with my laptop. A staff member asked me, not very politely, to leave the restaurant terrace because evening service was starting and they needed the tables. There may have been a language barrier, but the exact words were, “I wanted to tell you that you can go now.” I asked if they'd tell a guest to leave if they were having dinner there. The answer was something about needing to book in advance. Fine, but it would've been better to explain how to make a reservation instead of just turning me away. At the time, only one table was occupied and all the others were free. The whole thing really annoyed me.

The Wi-Fi can be unstable. When lots of clients are there, I sometimes can't connect even though the signal is strong.
