We stayed at the nearby hotel. The service, staff, accommodations, and restaurant were all outstanding. The castle itself lies in ruins, and it would be nice to see it restored.

I went in April, when it was still a bit cold and windy, but the viewpoint is perfect. You can see the whole city and beyond from there. There’s parking for around 30-40 cars, and benches where you can sit and take in the view. I’d like to come back in summer.

The old castle has a great panoramic view, and it’s a beautiful place with trails for running and trekking. Be sure to try their selected wine and Black Forest cake. If you’re in Bühl, do visit.

For a peaceful break from everyday bustle, Burg Windeck sits in a lovely, calm setting and is well worth a visit. There’s also horse riding right next to the palace, which adds some excitement. You can explore its history or just enjoy a relaxing getaway, and it has something for everyone.

The view from the castle tower is great, though the stairs are REALLY steep. That could be tough with smaller kids, especially if you have to carry them while gripping the railing yourself. We came for the playground and checked out the tower too. Parking was pretty crowded, but that was to be expected on a warm, sunny public holiday.
