We ended up leaving that evening and driving on to Hamburg. The hotel was entitled to charge for the stay, but in the circumstances, I think a lower rate would have been fairer. For a five-star place, this was one of the weakest I've stayed in. The room smelled damp, almost basement-like, and its window had been left ajar when we arrived. We had parked outside, then were told late that evening to move the car. Dinner was passable, but didn't have much flavor.

Booking.com said pets were allowed, but after I reserved, I was told cats weren't accepted and only dogs were. I asked them to waive the cancellation fee, and they refused. The service was very poor.

The breakfast was nice and the bar felt cosy. A beautiful, classic place, very clean, with friendly people.

I stopped briefly in Celle while travelling from Copenhagen back to Switzerland, and unfortunately didn't have time to explore the small, culturally interesting city. The hotel felt like the sort of five-star place you find in the German-speaking world: they still offer single rooms with roomy bathrooms, a shoe-polishing service, and even a brush for dusting off a tuxedo you rarely wear. I only missed a shoehorn, which is handy for older men. The bed, pillows, and shower were excellent, and breakfast lived up to the star rating. A classy hotel, highly recommended.
