Wasserturm Hotel Cologne, Curio Collection by Hilton

The birthday card in the room was a nice touch, but the welcome at the hotel was awful. We were left waiting for ages when we arrived, so we dropped our bag and went out since our room wasn't ready yet. Afterward they checked us into Room 814 without offering the other room again, the one I think was 835. My husband had brought me here as a birthday surprise, and we were both really disappointed. I've never had such a poor reception at a Hilton or anywhere else. Someone recommended this hotel to me, but I won't be recommending it to anyone.

Breakfast was a real highlight, especially the freshly cooked options and the sensational Apple French toast. The suite was spotless and huge, more than 500 sqft, and it had a sauna, though that closes at 10 pm. The staff were warm and welcoming, and the Christmas sweets at reception were a thoughtful touch. This was my first Curio Collection stay and it beat my expectations. The hotel isn't right by the Cathedral, but the metro is close, with lines 16 and 18 and a lift up to street level. Fantastic stay.

The terrace is closed off, so the view is only from your room window. I was lucky to get a room on the 8th floor. There's also a bar on the top floor that anyone can visit, except on Mondays when it's for hotel guests only. As someone who loves water towers, I really enjoyed how much of the original circular design and atmosphere has been kept. Great vibe, nice people, and delicious water at reception. A one of a kind stay that makes you want to return.

The rest of the hotel was great, but breakfast was a letdown. We got there at 0745 and most of the hot food, including eggs, bacon and sausage, had run out. Only the bacon was brought back. There were hardly any pastries, and the coffee machine wasn't working properly. At 31 EUROs per person, the quality and choice didn't justify the price.
