Garden Cottage

Only about five minutes from the airport. The room was quiet and reasonably comfortable, with a sturdy desk, and the food was tasty and practical, though there wasn’t much choice. The lighting could be better, the Wi-Fi was a little weak, and none of the TV streaming services worked. Getting the shower temperature right was more fiddly than it should’ve been.

The room was spacious, with two beds, and parking was convenient. The bathroom was pretty basic. We stayed here for the highway access, but a huge morning traffic jam meant we had to drive through town anyway. Our room was in a separate building, so we had to go outside for breakfast, and the roads were icy that morning. Breakfast had a decent range of sausages, but no good espresso. The staff were nice and spoke English well.

The restaurant had excellent breakfast and good beer on tap, but I had two frustrating stays here. On my first visit the Wi-Fi wasn’t working in my wing. When I told reception, I just got a blank look and, “What do you want me to do? We are fully booked...” On the second visit I was in room 201, a non-smoking room directly under a smoker’s room. Smoke came in through the window, so I couldn’t open it, and the bathroom ducts were connected too. Turning on my bathroom light started the fan and pulled smoke into the room. I complained and got the same response. The receptionist showed no problem-solving skills, and there was nobody else on site to speak with.

It felt like coming home in the evenings after my two workdays in Dresden. The area was quiet, with friendly staff, nice rooms, good breakfast, a bar serving draft beer, and plenty of free parking. It’s quite a way from the old town, but still a lovely base for visiting.
