The breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choice and good quality, and the restaurant served well-prepared food with attentive service. We also found the spa clean and relaxing. Staff outside reception were consistently kind, professional, and willing to help. Those parts of the hotel made for a much better experience, and could earn a higher rating on their own. Our room booking was another matter. We reserved a Junior Suite in June for the end of November and confirmed by phone a few days before arriving. At check-in, we were assigned room 1.4, in a separate annex reached by an outdoor staircase, rather than in the hotel building. It turned out to be an apartment with a kitchen, two bedrooms, one single and one double, and a living room. It was spacious, but the bathroom had only a shower, not the bathtub shown in the photos. It wasn’t what we had booked. Reception said the hotel was full and called it an “upgrade.” It didn’t feel that way to us, especially since the apartment was in another building, wasn’t listed on the hotel website, and showed wear. We asked to move to a double room, even though that would have been a downgrade from what we paid for, but the receptionist refused and said it was “this or nothing.” That response felt unacceptable and left us feeling misled. If the hotel sells apartments, they should show them clearly on the website and define what a Junior Suite or Grand Suite includes. Future guests should be cautious and insist on getting the room they booked. The way our reservation was handled was shameful and unprofessional.

The meat was incredibly delicious, but the service was awful. We asked for a menu for four dishes and were given six, then had to pay for the extra two. When we asked to have the leftovers packed, they misunderstood and took them away.

Nicole at reception was fantastic, helping us with everything we needed without hesitation, and the women at breakfast were friendly and helpful too. The hotel is in the heart of the old town and breakfast was great. Our room felt a bit dated, and the bathroom could have been cleaner. I’d stay here again.

The rooms were roomy and comfortable, with very good mattresses and pillows, and we enjoyed our stay. Breakfast had a nice range of classic options and plenty of treats. We also had dinner there, and the chicken fricassé was delicious. It’s a simple dish, but good ingredients made all the difference. There’s a spa that looked great, though we didn’t get a chance to try it. We’ll be back when we’re in Duderstadt. 10/10.

I’ve stayed at Zum Löwen several times and have always had a great experience. The rooms and the hotel are nicely designed, and everything has been clean. The staff are professional, polite, and helpful. Room 103 has a balcony facing the pedestrian street, so I’d try for that one if you can. The price is very reasonable for the quality.
