Ferienwohnung Büll

We can only speak about how the landlords treated us, not the apartment's cleanliness or other details. We were disappointed by the tone of the conversation, and a kinder response would have made it easier for us to accept that our stay couldn't go ahead. My parents had booked this vacation apartment for early August. My father unexpectedly passed away in mid-July, but my mother still wanted to travel to Fehmarn with her daughter and son-in-law in his memory. He had planned the trip and booked this accommodation. Right after his death, we called the landlords, explained what had happened, and asked if the three of us could stay. We offered to bring another mattress and pay an extra fee. They refused, saying personal circumstances couldn't be taken into account. They pointed out that there were only two kitchen chairs, without mentioning the two more visible in the photos in the bedroom, and said the living room armchair would have to be moved. They told us we should have travel cancellation insurance and cancel. We did cancel. We didn't want to deal with people we felt were so unsympathetic, and the cancellation cost us €525. It was the easiest option for the landlords, who could probably rent the apartment again, as the booking review seemed to suggest had happened. That looked like a win-win for them. For us, it was a disaster at first, both emotionally and because finding another place at such short notice was extremely difficult. We ended up paying quite a bit more, but were met with kindness and understanding. We hope the landlords would receive more empathy themselves if they ever went through an emotionally difficult time.
