I've stayed here twice, in 2023 and 2025, and it's a fantastic place in a fantastic city. This is a classic backpacker hostel with plenty of character. Beds are pretty cheap, and there's lots of space and amenities, including metal cylinder showers, a shared kitchen, and a lounge area with couches. It's within walking distance of the train station and close to the tram too. The staff are friendly and there 24/7. Even when there are lots of people in summer, it's still pretty quiet, not a rowdy party hostel. I'd highly recommend walking up the hill to climb Schlossbergturm for sunset.

A good budget place for a trip with friends. The beds are good, though the wooden floors can get noisy. Free coffee and tea are provided in the morning, and there are rooms for luggage storage.

We found the Black Forest Hostel clean and spacious, with a kitchen that was really well equipped. Even the 20-bed dorm felt comfortable rather than crowded, and it was much better than we expected. The wooden floors squeak, which was the one small downside. Affordable and cozy, and a great base for exploring Freiburg and the Black Forest.

We were only here for two nights, but it somehow felt like home. I felt at ease cooking and using the shared spaces, and never felt awkward. When snoring kept me awake, I was comfortable going downstairs to sleep. I don't know if that was against the rules, but nothing gave me that impression. The atmosphere was just really good.

Everything was clean and comfortable, from the bedroom to the bathrooms, and I had a great stay at this hostel. Most of the staff were very kind. The kitchen had plenty of utensils for cooking.
