We spent a whole cold, rainy weekend in Freiburg and barely left the hotel. It made for a relaxing stay. Our room was large, the pleasant spa opened at 3 p.m., and the lounge had lots of space plus a small kids' corner. The restaurant was pretty good, and the waiters and waitresses were friendly professionals. Breakfast was good. As is often the case in Germany these days, the breakfast assistants didn't know much, for example, one said, "We don't have camomille." But there was a very active, capable, smiling woman behind them, so just wait or ask for her. Some of the friendly receptionists seemed overwhelmed by their work, though a little patience helped. Freiburg itself wasn't for us. It felt like a city of 1,000 farmers and their disinherited descendants, alongside 100,000 exchange students staying six months. There was a smell of parties and weed around. Food and housing were terribly expensive, while food and service quality felt very low, with students serving. It wasn't made for pedestrians: cars were everywhere on the way in from the outskirts, and bicycles everywhere in the center. Look around before you move there.

The pool and sauna were a lovely bonus, and the hotel is near the train station and within walking distance of many attractions. We had a power cut on departure day, probably due to the terrible weather, which also delayed our trains. It was a strange way to end the visit, but we were happy with the stay and would return. We were two adults and our teenage daughter in a superior room, with enough space for all three of us. I can see why some people find the decor dated, but our room was clean, comfortable, quiet, and spacious. The older style had its advantages: plenty of storage, a mini fridge that kept things cold, and straightforward light switches instead of a touchscreen. Breakfast was nice too.

The location was ideal between the high speed train station and the old city, and both the room and breakfast were up to the **** standard. The payment terminal was broken, so staff had to enter card numbers by hand. My debit card was refused, and I had to sort things out for Accor using my credit card.

We'd happily bring the family back to Novotel Freiburg. The rooms were spacious, the place was clean and comfortable, and breakfast had plenty to choose from. Its location made it easy to explore on foot. The staff were always kind and helpful, and made us feel welcome.

We came for a weekend, staying three days, and wanted somewhere about a 15 minute walk from the center so we wouldn't need a car or public transport for meals and shopping. The location was excellent, with a taxi rank right outside. The room had a nice view, plenty of space, storage, and hangers. It was also cleaner than newer hotels, and about €100 a night for two adults and one child. The decor has a vintage feel, like it was the height of modern style in the 80s. The orange wood could use a lighter update, and the carpets have seen better days. The square pillows weren't flat, so I liked those, but some of the rectangular ones were smooth and others lumpy. The lumpy ones need improving. We asked for extra pillows after dinner and got them easily. Soundproofing needs work. Around 11 pm, someone in the room above stomped so loudly that I could still hear it through earplugs. At 12:20 I called reception. The woman spoke a little English and thought I wanted to change rooms in the middle of the night, so I called again. The man asked if I was the one requesting a room change. I said no. He said they couldn't do anything about outside noise, but I explained it was coming from upstairs. He understood and said they'd deal with it. The stomping finally stopped around 12:40. I wasn't sure whether the used glasses in the room had been washed or replaced with dishwasher-clean ones. When we returned, they were upside down on the counter or desk instead of on the coasters, which didn't seem sanitary. Housekeeping should place mugs and glasses consistently. They smelled like toilet hand soap. I worried that staff might clean the room and bathroom and then handle the glasses with the same gloves, so we washed them ourselves with our natural soap. Refills were inconsistent too. The Nespresso pods were replenished, but the cream and vanity kit weren't. Complimentary toiletries are usually refilled and arranged on the counter each day. We didn't eat breakfast there or use the pool, so I can't comment on those. I hope this feedback helps improve the hotel.
