HYPERION Hotel Garmisch – Partenkirchen

The breakfast was awesome, and the service was great. The location puts you right near the city centre.

Breakfast had a good spread, with fruit, cereal, pastries and hot food, and the quality was good. The staff were friendly, said hello whenever we passed, and answered our questions about the area. The bar staff also made great cocktails. The hotel is clean and modern, with nicely decorated rooms and what you need for a comfortable stay, including a coffee machine and fridge. Our bathroom was a bit small but worked perfectly well. We were lucky to get a room at the back with a balcony and a great view of Zugspitze. It’s only a few minutes’ walk to central Garmisch, so it’s a handy base for exploring farther afield by public transport or car. A few things did get frustrating. The breakfast buffet is crammed into a small area, which makes it awkward to get around people. Noise travels between rooms: we could hear neighbours moving chairs and closing doors, and also coming back from partying at 4 am. The garage parking seemed expensive, though you’re paying for convenience, and there’s free street parking around the hotel. We enjoyed our time at the Hyperion and would like to come back someday.

The heated indoor pool was the highlight for us. We stayed three nights in early spring, and our room had loads of space for three people as well as a breathtaking mountain view. Breakfast was decent enough to get the day started. It’s on the expensive side, but the quality of the amenities made the price feel fair.

The balcony had fantastic views, and I loved that the minibar was refilled each day, with ingredients for making apple schorle or spetzi. The room also had strong AC, which we really needed in the summer heat. I’m not sure how I would have managed temperatures close to 90f without it. Staff were very friendly too. Breakfast had lots of variety, especially the fruit. It was great that they cut up the oranges and grapefruit to make them easier to eat. The hotel was clean, and the bathroom was renovated, with good water pressure and hot and cold settings. The shower was on the small side, so a larger person might struggle, but it had a proper door that kept water in, unlike the half glass doors that often leak. The main downside was smoke. Other guests were loud on their balconies and kept smoking at night, so after a while ours smelled strongly of cigarettes. People also smoked by the outside breakfast area and the door. I wish there were a non-smoking area, since breathing secondhand smoke is bad for your health. The location is walkable and parking is available if you need it. It costs a bit more than other places in the area, but for a summer visit I thought the AC made it well worth it. I’d recommend the hotel.
