Auszeit am Eifelsteig

The only real snag for me was the internet. Streaming Belgian TV was difficult for one night, perhaps because several guests were online, or because the signal was weaker in my basement apartment. It barely affected my stay, though. I spent nine days here from Christmas 2019 through Dreikoninge 2020, and found Auszeit am Eifelstieg a great base for getting out into the Vulkaneifel. Even in winter, the area is lovely for walking and cycling. I especially liked the hikes around Manderscheid and Meerfeld. The Kosmosradweg, Mosel radweg and Mineral Quelle radweg head off in different directions, and having my own bike was useful for reaching trailheads. Lukas surprised me on arrival by upgrading my single room to a small basement apartment. It had everything I needed: a comfortable bed, a warm shower and a kitchen with a fridge and microwave. The apartment was cleaned daily, and the team even did my washing up. They respected my privacy and were happy to answer questions with plenty of information. Breakfast had lots of different food and drinks to choose from and was delicious. There isn't lunch or dinner at Auszeit, but two nearby restaurants make it easy to find a good meal. I only had dinner at Berghof, and it was a great experience. For other meals, you can buy food in nearby Daun. It was a very good fit for me. If you're after reasonably priced accommodation in the Vulkaneifel, I highly recommend it.

The Maareglück circular trail is about a kilometer away on foot, and I would recommend it to beginners. It's 15 km and stays interesting the whole way. Thanks to Lukas for a lovely stay. We were in a ground-floor room for five days in January 2026. It was in Gemünden, a little outside town, and had a balcony facing the garden. The room was spacious and recently renovated, with the washbasin separate from the shower. There was satellite TV and free Wi-Fi. The mattresses and pillows were a little uncomfortable for us, so replacing them sometime soon might be worth considering. Breakfast was plentiful, and nothing seemed to be missing. They checked whether we wanted to eat later than 8:00 to 10:00, around 8:30, which was no trouble. At the time we were the only long-term guests. If we ran out of coffee or milk, they asked and brought more. Eggs were available boiled or fried, with bacon if we wanted it. The welcome was warm, and everything was explained patiently and clearly. It was a very nice stay.

The setting was okay, outside Daun but close to Gemündener Maar and some walking routes. There was plenty of parking, and the staff, though only around for certain hours, were friendly. Breakfast suited the price, but don't expect anything special. There was filter coffee only, for example, no cappuccino. This review is about the room, not the holiday apartment. We found it very small and couldn't make it dark. There seemed to be just two single beds pushed together, with a gap in the middle, and the mattresses were very hard. The only window covering was a thin, white, semi-transparent curtain that blocked perhaps 20% of the sunlight, so we woke up early. The house was also very noisy, whether because of its age or the thin drywall. From 8 in the morning we could hear the cleaning staff and/or other guests moving about, and couldn't sleep in. That's not the kind of quiet break we had imagined, especially in the mornings.

The rooms are cozy and nicely furnished, and the hosts were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was thoughtfully prepared, with plenty to choose from. A great spot on the Eifelsteig for a short getaway or a longer stay, quiet but not cut off from everything. Highly recommended!
