We enjoyed the food and atmosphere, and the stay itself was very pleasant and relaxing. But checkout left a bitter taste. We were charged for two breakfasts even though my husband hadn't eaten one. The receptionist who handled our stay had told us the night before that we’d only be charged for people who attended breakfast. The comment we heard from that receptionist at checkout was also very unpleasant. The information was misleading and contradictory. Reception staff need better training in how they communicate with customers.

The menu is compact, but the dishes were all very well made and the food was great, with good-quality ingredients. The waiter said all the produce was local and the meat products especially came from the house. Meals are expensive, though.

The restaurant is what keeps bringing us back. I’ve come here for years with my wife’s German family for special occasions, and the food is always amazing. The waiters are highly professional and well trained, something I’ve noticed more in Germany than in North America. If you’re after traditional southern German food in a slightly more upscale setting, this is the place. We haven’t stayed at the hotel, so I can’t comment on the rooms. Book ahead if you’re planning to eat here, since it’s often full well in advance.

What really stands out is how the staff listened and made my girlfriend feel cared for. She has rheumatoid arthritis and follows a strict diet to avoid foods that can cause inflammation, which usually makes restaurants and travel difficult. At the Hirsch, they let her change her meal completely and brought it exactly as she’d described it. That kind of care makes a real difference to us. We also enjoyed the rest of the stay. The rooms are modest but lovely and well equipped, and I don’t think they need the updates some people suggest. The spa has two hot, dry saunas at 60 and 90 degrees Celsius, plus a relaxing room with a view over Ulm. The restaurant uses fresh ingredients and prepares them beautifully. Calling the food just “OK” is hard to understand after our meal tonight. This hotel and restaurant is a regular stop on our European travels, and if you’re nearby, I think you’ll be glad you tried it.
