Hotel Schloss Spyker

Spyker Castle looks lovely from the outside, though sadly it's closed.

We had a lovely time at the Spyker Castle Market, then wandered through the little park. The peaceful feel was especially nice, and it wasn't crowded. There aren't many stalls, but the handmade goods are a fantastic selection. The visit was well worth the trip for us, and we'd happily return and recommend it.

The restaurant food was delicious, and the staff there were very friendly. The hotel staff were helpful and friendly too. The setting is quiet, surrounded by nature, with a lake view, and there are good connections to Glowe, Binz, and the Störtebeker Festival. We booked in December and regretted it, since August was much cheaper. Our attic room was basic, with only two small windows, and some of the light switches didn't work. There is no elevator, so getting up there takes a reasonable level of fitness. It was very clean, though, and the small windows didn't bother us over two nights. Breakfast was a letdown for us. The rolls had been reheated, the bread seemed supermarket quality, and the coffee was very weak. The juices, cheeses, and cold cuts weren't labeled. Everything was pre-packaged, with nothing from a butcher or cheese dairy. That would be a real plus in such a lovely place. Vegetarians can find something to eat.

It wasn't worth the trip for us. Maybe all the markets and flea markets could be brought together in one place. We expected more from a castle market, but found five stalls selling socks and potholders, plus one jewelry stall, all on a dry patch of grass.
