The food was great.

This place is now called dsHotel Gronau. We had a three-day half-board package and absolutely didn't feel welcome. The hotel didn't seem to know what it was doing, or was just trying to add on. As a guest, you have to submit to them, instead of them making an effort to give you a pleasant stay. We couldn't check in until 8:15 PM on Friday. Although we'd missed out on food, we were offered nothing beyond a welcome drink with alcohol. Breakfast was good, but dinner was at 6:30 PM, leaving nothing available in between such late hours. We weren't offered a choice between two dishes, as would be normal. We got goulash with green beans and spatzel, but there was no meat, only thick lumps of fat, and everything was cold. Dinner is supposed to be hot. No one asked during those days if everything was to our liking, and there was no chance to speak to anyone. The mattress was so soft it gave me problems even though I hadn't had complaints before. I woke up crying for four hours from agony and pain. We only found out after making a reservation that dogs weren't allowed in the dining room. We'd indicated this on the website, and hadn't made a reservation. The dining room was tiny and uninviting, with too many people crammed into a small space at once. It didn't make us want to linger. If you want a drink on the terrace, you have to order it inside, and the tables aren't cleaned. We heard the bowling club wanted to make a reservation, but they wouldn't make an exception for them either to stay past 10:30 PM. After 10:00 PM everything is locked, and after breakfast it's all locked until 3:00 PM. The walking route that was meant to start at the hotel can no longer be completed because a fence and locks block it after a few hundred meters.

We went for dinner with the whole family. They couldn't make Mom's salad, the steaks were out of stock, and the beer I was having with my dad had run out. They didn't think it was worth putting another keg on tap. No one asked if we wanted dessert, and as we left, they looked at us with disdain.

We've been coming here for ten years and it was always good, but this visit was a real disappointment. They were out of Weisen beer and the T-bone steak, and there was no ice cream. The Alt beer we were drinking had run out, and they didn't think it was worth opening another keg. Service was poor. Nobody even asked if we wanted dessert, and the waitress didn't look back at us when we left. Such a shame. We won't be back.
