Best Western Plus Hotel Stadtquartier Haan

Big respect to the man at reception! The hotel was amazing, and so were the breakfast, pool, and sauna.

There are good restaurants and supermarkets nearby if you need anything, and we got from the airport in 15 minutes. The hotel is close to the airport, while the city is about 30 minutes away at most, depending on traffic. It’s a calm place to stay outside Dusseldorf. We only stayed from late evening until an early checkout, so parking on the street worked for us, though I’d suggest choosing the hotel parking based on how long you’re staying. Comfortable, with a good breakfast at an economical price.

I left more stressed than when I arrived, and won’t stay here again, even though I expect to be in the area more often. For 130€ a night plus 20€/night for my dog, this alleged 4-star hotel was at least 80-100€/night more than it was worth. The highest dog fee I’d come across before was 12-15€. I’ve had better customer service in hostels. After I put a lot of effort into contacting them and explaining the problems, the reply was a lukewarm “Ah, well. Ok. Sorry.” No compensation was offered for a pretty stressful stay. I also tried their Best Western form, which apparently wasn’t sent because it required a mm-tt-yyyy date format. Really? We’re in Europe, not the US. Getting basic information was a struggle from the start. Check-in was slow and important details were missing. I couldn’t find the WiFi password or information about breakfast, pool, or sauna hours in my room, so I went upstairs to ask. The woman stared at me and said, “You are a guest here?” That felt very impolite. Apparently wearing a fleece jacket instead of a suit made me a second-class guest. Once I got the WiFi code, the connection in my room was barely usable and nowhere near enough for the data I needed, despite the hotel website praising its WiFi. Maybe it works better elsewhere, but I was downstairs at the end of the long corridor, probably room 107 or 109. I had to use my own data to work. The pool and sauna were just as frustrating. I’d asked in writing ahead of time about their early morning hours because I planned to use them before working from the hotel. They gave me the times, but didn’t mention that the sauna needed advance notice to heat up. I changed into my swimsuit only to find the sauna off and the pool area unlit. Saving energy for environmental reasons is great, but guests should be told, especially when they’ve asked specifically about the facilities. A sign in the pool area said to call reception if the sauna was off, but that phone was dead and stayed broken throughout my three-night stay. The infrared cabin and the dimmed sauna lights also didn’t work, and nothing was fixed during the four days I was there. After changing back, returning to my room to call reception, waiting for staff to come down, and then waiting another 20 minutes for the sauna to heat, it was time to go back and start work. Great way to save energy, nobody will use the sauna that way. That’s not a relaxing start to the day. When I complained, a staff member listened and asked me to email the issues, saying I’d get a reply. I wrote everything out and heard nothing for more than 10 days. When I called, they said they hadn’t received an email that day. I forwarded it to the same address two minutes before the call, and the woman on the phone found it. Instead of admitting it hadn’t been handled, they later said it must have gone to spam. Strange that the second email got through, then. I know which hotel chain to avoid from now on. This place is not a 4-star hotel at all. If I could, I’d give it zero stars.

The front desk team were really helpful, and Klaudia was especially lovely. She even helped me pick out a little souvenir from my stay. For lunch, I’d recommend the fish restaurant just across the street, and Nivy Sushi and Grill was absolutely excellent for dinner. The rooms are comfortable, with tasteful decor and nice ambient lighting. Breakfast was reasonable, though not very imaginative. I last stayed when it was called Hotel Savoy City Class, before the Best Western Plus makeover. A very enjoyable stay. Well done, Klaudia and the Team.
