The owners always have a witty comment ready, and breakfast is fantastic for the price. It's a perfect fit if sterile, boring accommodations aren't your thing. I'd happily come back.

The long drive through the dark, deserted hotel felt like stepping into a horror movie, so this might suit horror fans and people with low expectations 😅. I was planning a relaxing holiday in the Harz Mountains and was only passing through Halberstadt. When I opened the creaky door, there was an old piano in the corner, dolls behind glass, and creepy clown paintings on the walls. The stairs creaked as I went up, and the lights started flickering. Nobody was at reception, though a number on the door said to call in that situation. After I called, a woman with long black hair came out of the darkness and handed us our room keys. She was friendly, and the rooms were reasonably clean, but the very faded bed linens with loose threads were extremely off-putting. The whole oppressive atmosphere made me feel very uncomfortable. The walls were thin, and the door felt as flimsy as paper. I would have much rather moved to another hotel that same evening, but it was already so late. I'd suggest renovating the hotel, or at least replacing the paintings with something more cheerful and changing the lightbulbs. A sign outside might also ease the anxiety of having to step into the dark.
