Hotel Schwarzwaldhof Gutzweiler

We spotted people having beers on the terrace when we got there, and it looked lovely. We asked if we could eat outside too, but unfortunately they weren’t serving out there.

The staff always make me feel welcome, and the food has been consistently good whenever I’ve visited. The dishes are interesting and well made, with great quality ingredients. It’s one of the best restaurants in the area, and I make a point of stopping by whenever I’m nearby.

We were glad to leave and wouldn’t stay here again. We travel a lot and enjoy it, but this hotel isn’t one we’d recommend. The area is beautiful, so I’m sure there are better places in town with friendlier staff. The management was very unfriendly, and that unfortunately seemed to affect some of the other staff too. There’s a good Italian Restaurant across the plaza from the hotel, though. The owners and staff were genuinely friendly, and the food was very good. I had noodles with fresh seasonal chanterelles, and the pizza was good too. The street-facing rooms were noisy late into the evening, with loud conversations from guests and passersby. Deliveries started at 6 AM, and lorries reversing in the parking lot woke us early. We couldn’t sleep with the window open because the noise echoes outside the hotel. The carpet was very worn, and the place smelled strongly of smoke and food, with poor ventilation. Our room had thick shag carpet like the breakfast room. It seemed impossible to keep clean, and it was unpleasant to think of what might collect in it and breathe it in. We travel quite a bit, so I’m surprised this hotel gets so many five-star reviews. Maybe some people don’t get out much or have very low expectations.

We had a great time and enjoyed a lovely dinner. Breakfast was amazing, with cinnamon buns, bunt cake, and fresh juices. The lady at reception was so friendly and kind, and really helpful when we arrived without a booking.
