Check-in was easy, and the room felt somewhat clean. It could work for a quick sleep while traveling, if it weren't for the smell. There was a strong sewage odor in the room, at least in room 5. The active ventilation was cheap and very loud, and I couldn't turn it off. They did provide earplugs. They should offer some kind of face mask to remove the odor.
I've stayed at a Roatel before, but this was my first time in Room 5. I only read the reviews here after my stay, and found I had the same issue others mentioned: a very loud fan that wouldn't switch off. The shutoff switch above the desk didn't work, and by 2 a.m. I'd had enough. I found the cupboard above the toilet was unlocked. Inside was a fuse box, and one switch turned off the fan, though it also cut the bathroom lighting on that side of the container. Hopefully this helps other Room 5 guests with the same problem. We really shouldn't have to use a workaround like that (March 2026).
I was pleasantly surprised overall and would book again. Rooms 5-8 have windows facing a truck parking area, so idling engines and refrigeration units might be annoying at night, but I'll only know tomorrow. The parking across the street by Viebrock Musterhaus is a bit awkwardly arranged, especially with an unused green area available.
The rooms are small but clean, and the service can be a smart, good-value option for a short overnight stay near the highway. I've used it before and appreciated that. This time, I booked in the afternoon and arrived at dawn, hoping to rest and shower for a few hours before an appointment. I couldn't get in because I hadn't completed digital check-in before midnight. That hadn't been an issue on my earlier stays, even when I arrived late. There was no one I could contact at that hour, and I'd already paid. The operator showed no goodwill or understanding the next day, so I ended up spending the night in my car. Later, Roatel contacted me and refunded part of the amount as a goodwill gesture, so I've revised my review. The service itself is very good and good value, but the misunderstanding made for a bad night.
It was quiet at night despite being at the truck stop, and I didn't need the earplugs even with the window tilted open. The place is very tidy and clean, though quite small, and fine for an overnight stay. There's no reception or key, you get in with your phone over the internet. It didn't work for me at first, but switching from Firefox to Chrome fixed it. You can clearly hear a neighbor if they're talking loudly on the phone.
