Hotel & Pension Aßmann

Our stay was paid for through Booking.com, but when we arrived at 17:30, the owners said they had no room for us, even though the reservation was still active. Earlier, after the booking, they had called to check whether we could arrive before 18:00. They said that was the latest check-in time and that we would need to cancel if we couldn't make it. We weren't sure we'd finish sightseeing in time, so we asked about arriving at 19:00. They demanded another 25 EUR for every hour after 18:00, saying they had to pay “night workers,” although they run reception themselves and, as far as we could tell, have no staff. While we were considering the extra charge, they sent several messages telling us to cancel because they wouldn't wait past 18:00. When we finally got there, the woman who owns the place was rude, unprofessional, and no help at all. She spoke German throughout and said that in Germany we had to speak German. We managed with Google Translator. Even after we arrived, she kept asking us to cancel the booking, although she had no room for us. She gave us different stories about the reservation. First she said Booking.com had already cancelled it, but we had no cancellation notice and could still see it as active. When we asked her to cancel it herself, she said she'd do it the next day. She wouldn't cancel it or give us our money back, and told us to leave. She even threatened to call the police. I told her to go ahead, but she didn't. Eventually she called Booking.com to cancel. She didn't say it was her mistake; she said she wanted to cancel because we were “unfreundlich” and she didn't want guests like us at her hotel. Booking.com refunded our stay and covered the difference for a real hotel. Stay away from ASSmann.
