Grenzbachmühle

It was okay.

After our hike, the four of us found plenty of parking at the Grenzbachmühle and were welcomed warmly. The service was excellent, the food very good, and the prices felt like great value. We sat in the bright conservatory, though it was a little chilly. The rest of the dining room was quite dark, and there was a smell of smoke throughout except in the conservatory. In good weather, you can sit outside.

The Westerwald schnitzel was huge and delicious, and the fries were just right, crisp outside and a little soft inside. I’d stopped for a drink and a meal in the late afternoon, hiking stage thirteen of the Westerwaldsteig from Flammersfeld to Horhausen in perfect weather. The side salad came first and was nearly enough to fill me up by itself. Good thing the end of the stage wasn’t far away.

We only stopped to eat on the terrace, though the hotel rooms are mostly rented to tradespeople. The meal was good, and the landlady’s mother served us with real charm. There’s a big parking lot right outside, and the spot beside the forest is ideal for walks or hikes with a dog.
