Mercure Hotel Wiesbaden City

The birthday request was the biggest letdown. I asked if they could do a small surprise or perhaps a piece of cake at breakfast for my boyfriend, but the receptionist first said he'd check and then came back with nothing. For a 4-star hotel, that felt like no imagination at all. Even a handwritten happy birthday and a 200 ml bottle of wine would have been something. I hope management reads this, because to me it points to poor management. I expected Mercure hotels to be good in every city, but this one in Wiesbaden didn't impress me much. The room was large but dated, the bed downstairs was ragged, and it felt cold with the air conditioning behaving oddly. The bathroom seemed very small for such a big room. The toiletries were the one thing I liked. Breakfast was sparse. The hot food was one kind of sausage, meatballs, an omelet and boiled eggs, with cold appetizers for the rest. I only found out about the pancakes near the end because I hadn't seen them being made when we arrived.

The room and beds were tiny, and the bathrooms had a sewer smell. There's only one thin duvet, with no spare blanket in the closet, so you have to call reception and wait for one. The A/C also struggled on hot summer days. I felt treated like a possible criminal by the staff. At breakfast, when I went for coffee, an employee followed me to the machine to make sure I picked “coffee” and nothing else. This may meet German expectations, but it didn't really meet international ones.

Unten hui, oben pfui, as a German would put it. The lobby, bar and restaurant have been renovated, but my room was dated and dirty, with mold as well. The decor seemed questionable for a room described as premium.

The staff were friendly, the bed was soft, and breakfast had really tasty pancakes, salmon and guacamole. We also found the pool and sauna not too busy when we visited. We had a perfect stay in Wiesbaden. I liked the hotel's lobby, bars and breakfast room decor, and I'd rate the place 10/10. We'll definitely come back.
