Romantik Parkhotel Wasserburg Anholt

The old castle setting makes this hotel a great choice for a quiet or romantic getaway. It’s just across the Dutch border, so it’s an easy enough drive for most people from the Netherlands. The terrace looks out over the water and castle garden, which guests can wander through for free. Once you’ve walked around the magical, well-kept garden, the admission fee makes sense. The kitchen is fantastic for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the staff are friendly and very professional. If you’re after a fairytale getaway, I’d recommend it. Parkhotel Romantik gets 5 stars from me.

We spent a long weekend here and highly recommend the hotel. It’s a classy place, with castle-era decor alongside all the modern conveniences. The dining room looks through its glass walls onto the gardens and canals, where swans, coots, doves, and other birds gather. We had dinner one evening and breakfast twice, and the food was delicious with a sophisticated feel. Even in our casual tourist clothes, we felt comfortable. The gardens are extensive and beautifully maintained, and we began the weekend with a long walk through them. Fresh flowers throughout the hotel, plus homemade snacks and fruit in our room at no charge, showed real attention to detail. We only wish we’d found this well-kept secret sooner.

The restaurant has a romantic setting and a nice view from the table. We had the five-course menu: four courses were great, but the main course wasn’t to our taste and didn’t fit with the rest of the menu. The waiting staff were very friendly and professional. We weren’t keen on the robots they use to clean the tables, but overall it was a good experience.

The restored castle is beautiful, and our room had plenty of charm. Dinner and breakfast were both wonderful. The staff were very welcoming and accommodating, even with the language differences.
