House Flora, Golden Knoepke

My first visit was in 1974, and my latest stays were in 2015 and 2017. I can recommend the hotel. It's right in the middle of town, close to a bakery and small supermarket, with a short walk to the beach and not far from the harbor. Rooms are clean, housekeeping is friendly, and the interior is nicely done. The breakfast buffet is great; lunch and dinner offer plenty of choices for different tastes, with generous portions. There's an indoor pool connected to a spa. Windows open, but there's no air-conditioning. The hotel no longer has self-service laundry, though laundry service is available.

We stayed five nights in February 2026, two adults over 70, in a third-floor apartment with half board. The staff were a particular pleasure: always friendly and attentive, and happy to take care of even small requests. Housekeeping even brought our bedtime treat in person. The apartment was well equipped, including a coffee machine and refrigerator, and the view over the Wadden Sea and harbor was impressive. Guests can choose how often they want room service and fresh towels. If you opt out, the hotel gives you coffee and cake once a day. Downstairs there is a sauna, fitness area, and a 12-meter pool where you can actually swim. Breakfast was lavish, with a huge selection of jams. Dinner was a four-course meal plus an amuse-bouche. We wouldn't have picked the menu dishes ourselves, but each one surprised us with its creativity, careful preparation, and presentation. The building's history shows in its many additions and renovations, which add to its distinctive charm rather than detract from it. The entrance and central staircase are especially worth a look. Hotel Freese is centrally located in town, with a harbor view and easy access to shops, walks, and both ends of the island. This is an unpaid review, but we enjoyed our stay enough to write at length. Thank you!

The room and location were good, and the spa was also nice, with most of it renovated. But for a four-star hotel, the experience was clearly below average overall, mainly because breakfast felt scaled back and the pricing was hard to miss. Service staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, though a slight language barrier seemed to make coordination difficult. Shortly after 9:00 there was no bacon left. We asked twice, and a small portion was finally cooked after 9:30. A manager should be overseeing this, as is standard practice. Breakfast wasn't terrible, but it had gone downhill considerably since our visit three years earlier. Roast beef and minced pork were only served on Sundays; during the week there were just ordinary cold cuts. The high-quality smoked fish selection had also been replaced with fried herring and rollmops.
