Walter's Hof

The room had a spectacular view, but it was badly dated. The restaurant terrace also has a wonderful outlook, yet dinner was a disappointment. We waited an hour and a half for the first course, and the bread did not arrive until an hour had passed and we had asked three times. The next table had a similar experience and left after waiting two hours for their salad. The staff serving us had only been at Hotel Walter's Hof for two weeks, spoke only English, and seemed completely new to hospitality. Breakfast was outrageously meager for this price range. We won't recommend this hotel.

We'd heard good things about the hotel and restaurant from friends and hoped for a nice dinner. But even a good chef can't make up for poor service. Communication especially needs work. In a German-speaking country, speaking German is a basic requirement for a place like this.

I just wanted a drink and a bite on the terrace. The website mentioned daily specials, but the receptionist said there weren't any. They asked if I was staying at the hotel, as though that would have changed whether they'd offer me something. The kitchen was open, yet nobody seemed willing to make a sale. I ordered a cappuccino and had to wait 15 minutes, even though the place was completely empty. No drinks menu was offered. What arrived was one of the saddest cappuccinos I've seen in ages, and it tasted just as bad. No biscuit, no sugar, and a hefty €5. Apparently you can only pay if you speak English. Nobody offered to help me carry the stroller up or down the stairs, despite having nothing to do. Oh dear!

Over breakfast, old memories of our wilder days in Kampen come back to us. We've been coming here for ages and enjoy the old-fashioned atmosphere, even if it may not suit newcomers. The service has always been friendly and attentive, and the staff were generous and helpful whenever we needed something from the buffet.
