Hotel Hasen Kaufbeuren

Hotel Hasen is a basic place to stay, so don’t expect a stylish hostel. For the reasonable price, though, we got more than expected. Our room wasn’t especially large, but had what we needed, and the bed was more comfortable than beds we’ve had in some pricier hotels. The simple bathroom was perfectly adequate, and there were even Sky TV channels. We couldn’t find the safe mentioned in the room information, so it must have been well hidden. Everything is handled without contact. Before the stay, you get an email explaining where to park and how to enter. At the old reception desk, which isn’t staffed anymore, an envelope has your key and registration form. After the stay, you can leave both in the mailbox. The room folder explains things like using the TV and how cleaning works. Our room was very clean when we arrived, and the mid-stay cleaning went smoothly. There’s a fridge with cold drinks and a table with coffee and tea in the entrance area, all at reasonable prices. During our stay, filter coffee was free, other coffee cost 1 euro, and the drinks in the fridge, some of them 1 liter, were 2.50 euros each. Payment is cash, left in a small box on the table. We didn’t have breakfast, though it is available. You can walk to the station in about 10 minutes, to a supermarket in just over 5, and to the old town in a little under 10. If you want an inexpensive, clean place, Hotel Hasen fits the bill.

We were told our booking didn’t include breakfast because the room number didn’t match, even though we’d been told we booked a room with breakfast. Check-in was confusing too: the key left at reception had the wrong room number. When we called, they said it was the same type of room and told us to use it.

The room was clean and spacious, and the hotel is easy to reach on foot from the train station. There’s a park nearby for a pleasant little walk. Breakfast was amazing.

It was cheap and okay for a three-star hotel. There were some nice little gifts waiting in the room, but during corona there was no one at the reception desk, so dealing with the formalities was difficult and there was no personal welcome. Breakfast felt rushed because the employee seemed overworked, and we had to fill out all kinds of paperwork. It wasn’t a nice start to a vacation. Other hotels managed a buffet with gloves and masks, so that seemed possible too.
